Floods kill more and more people each year. Students name the most recent floods in Oceania, and explain how floods impact the people and the economy.

40 comments:

  1. The most recent flood was The Rakaia Gorge flood. It happened August 7 2008. I think that floods can ruin a country's economy by destroying their crops and building. For example people have fields filled with goods they can sell and make money to survive. But if a flood comes along and destroys their fields then they lose all the money they invested into growing their goods. It can also destroy building the the country may need such as factories. Any type of factory is needed. If the people lose that then they make any money or buy what they need.

  2. Floods destroy the economy by destoying peoples homes, food supply, and transportation. People are usually left with nothing to buy or sell, which results to little profit. Damages from these massive floods leave people homeless and poor. Everything gets swept away along with the water, and is destroyed. The most recent flood that occured in Oceania was the Rakaia Gorge flood, located on the Rakaia River in inland Canterbury in New Zealand.

  3. Floods can destroy buildings, houses, and crops. People can become homeless after floods and all of their crops can be wiped out. Some recent floods were in the Philippines and Rakaia Gorge. The Tropical Storm Ketsana caused the flood in the Philippines and about fifty people died and twenty one were missing.Rakaia Gorge happened on August 7, 2008.

  4. The floods are very dangerous becausse it destroy homes, farms, people died or they disappear. For example in 27 September 2009, Plilippines had a terrible flood. The flood caused 70 people died or missing. This flood was worst than four decades. After it was really difficult for the people because they did not have a place to live or what to eat.

  5. All fluds are very dangerous. They ruin any homes and there is nothing that humans can really do about it because it is just like a natural disaser. It is becoming to be more common around the world and people have no control about it. There was a terrible flund in the Philippeans and it had caused 70 people to either die or go missing. This was a very bad time for this place. They did not have food. The people did not have just every day things because it had been lost frim the flud or ruined. These people are now suffering to f=ind a place to live and to be able to survive. Fluds impact the economy by everythig getting ruined. Therefore, the community has to clean up for this natural disaster and pay to get houses rebuilt. This was not just in the Philippeans but it happens everywhere around the world.

  6. Floods that are going on is just horrible. Its is just bad to know that a flood is about to hit you where you live at and knowing that you have to figure out what you have to do to save yourself and your family.

  7. Floods have a major effect on the economy because they destory homes, crops, and kill people. After a flood there huge mess people are left homeless not knowing where to go, people crying because they lost a love one people missing families left with no food. The economy has to suffer to rebuild homes, buildings, and crops.

  8. The most recent flood in Oceania is the Rakaia Gorge Flood. Floods are devastating for people and the economie, if a town relies on agriculture and there is a flood, the crops are destroyed and there is no income for that area. Then the people from a city nearby that might get their crops from that town, do not have food, causing starvation. Floods also kill cattle, destroy houses and industral buildings, drown small children and infants, and so on.

  9. In the Philippines, there was a tropical storm that came into the main land that killed about 95 people. After a while when the sun came out, the water started going away and a lot of bodies were found. These floods forced people to move out of their homes and if they couldn't do that, they'd be at the top of their roof waiting for help. The floods blocked roads and the water raises about 6 kilometes. This one storm dropped more rain than a months supply and about 16 inches of water was everywhere.

  10. Floods are very dangerous, they can destroy houses, buildings and everything else. Countries economic status drops as well just trying to fix some of the damage and cleaning up the mess. The last flood that i am aware of is the one that happened in the Phlipines, leaving many dead and missing, my family that currently lives in the Philipines told me that many buildings and houses were destroyed and everything was water damaged.

  11. Floods cause a lot of damage to homes and cities, and can kill many people easily. Recently 51 people were killed after a tropical storm swept through the Philippines. There was also another time, also recently, when rescuers plucked bodies from muddy floodwaters and saved drenched suvivors from rooftops after another tropical storm tore through the northern Philippines and left at least 106 people dead and missing. If you remember back a few years ago, during Hurricane Katrina, more than 1,800 people lost their lives, and more than 81 billion dollars in damages occured. New Orleans is still getting rebuilt, today. And wont be back to the way it used to be for a long time. Thats how bad floods can get.

  12. Floods are very strong, rough and destructive towards people, because they lose their homes and their lives etc. There was a terrible flund in the Philippeans and it had caused 70 people to either die or go missing. This was a very bad time for this place. They did not have food. Some of the people who has been affected by the flood found their own ways to stay alive or in other words to survive.

  13. Floods are extremely dangerous and can ruin peoples homes and lives. In the Phillipines it is located right near a body of water which makes it easy for floods to happen. The Latest flood took over northern Philiipines and destroyed house, farms and roads for transportation. During a flood, nothing is bought or sold so no one makes any profit. It also ruins all the food supply. The flood left more than 70 people killed or missing, this flood was the worse flood that the Phillipines has had in 4 decades.

  14. The most recent flood in Oceania was the Rakaia Gorge flood. Floods are very dangerous, they make a lot of damage, people lose their houses, a lot of buildings get destroyed and a lot of people die in floods. Floods make a lot of destruction.

  15. Recently in Oceania, there has been a flood in Fuji and three floods in New Zealand. Floods kill people by moving them around. People have a hard time swimming in floods. Eventually, people drown when the water level becomes too high. Floods are also bad for the economy because of what they take away from the world. Papers become wet and can never be used again. Other things get washed away and lost. People who survive the floods would then have to buy things that are expensive and start their lives all over again.

  16. Floods, as the blog says, always ends up claiming someone's life. And it always ends up destroying things. This does include the commonly said food and factories. This affects the economy because the government has to spend money on repairing the damage done. Plus the money spent on surviving people. And people, obviously, lose their homes, jobs, businesses, etc. And the saddest loss, a loved one.

  17. Floods impact human life drastically. Floods can destroy houses, wash out minerals in soil needed for crops, and leaving thousands homeless. On September 28, 2009 in Cainta, victims from one of the worst floods in more than a decade were cleaning up their damaged home along with rescue workers pulling up dead bodies from the muddy floodwaters. Many have been able to evacuate to a safe spot, but many were not so lucky. Many have been forced to stay up in their houses in the upper floors or on their roofs. A women told her story of how she was pulled under the water and flushed away because the current was so strong. Luckily she was saved by some local rescue workers. Floods have a dangerous effect and can be very harmful to human life and everything around it.

  18. There have been many floods and storms in the Philippines lately. The numbers in deaths are very high. In one storm 106 people died and went missing. This is only one of the many floods happening in the Philippines right now. These disasters tear though houses leaving them ruined and littered with bodies. The Philippines are getting ruined by these huge natural disasters. There is really nothing you can do to prevent these natural disasters, all you can really do is hope for the best and help as much as you can to help the people afterwards.

  19. Floods cause destruction and suffering in countries throughout Oceania. The Philippines have been constantly hit with floods. They cause many deaths, and destroy homes and other buildings. This not only hurts the economy, but also gets in the way of other things. An anti-communist attack by the Philippines military was delayed because they needed soldiers to provide tsunami and flood relief.

  20. One recent flood is the Rakaia Gorge Flood, which was caused by heavy rain. Floods can cause long term effects like losing your home from one, they can also wash away cities and towns. After a flood, depending on how much people were affected, they might lose their homes, or might loose their crops that are growing. After a flood is over, a lot of extra work is made, because all of the buildings, buisnesses, farms, crops, and homes that were affected have to be re-built, or repaired, which can be costly and time consuming.

  21. Floods can easily kill many many people. They can destroy all types of buildings such as homes leaving many people homeless. Floods can also destroy stores and buisiness. The most recent flood that has occur in the Philipines. that whiped out many people killing them and destroying homes and other stores

It destroys crops and when crops die a lot of people are left with nothing to sell, and when people have no crops to sell theres no food for people, so people starve. Floods also destroy wildlife by destroying trees. Floods are really bad to humans because they destroy houses and any other building in its path.

  24. Rakaia Gorgeis is the most recent flood and it hapened in August 7, 2008. Floods take with them the lives of many people as well as many homes. This impacts people because many of the people who don't die loose either a loved one or thier homes or even oth which will lead to a big change in the life style of anyone. Those in the comunity who don't loose anything have to deal with homeless people taking over the neighborhood. it can effect an economy by destroing buildings and places where big buisnes take place and cause the money making proces of the region to fall and evn stop. Floods are nothing but evil.

  26. The one of the most recent fllods of 2009 was in January 15 in Fiji. This flood continued on for days and left about 9,000 people homeless. The flood had damage property like crops and infracstures. In Wednesday of the next week a three year old boy drowned while he was playing near a river with strong water coming. The U.S. said that the destruction cost about $17 million dollars. Some countries donated money to Fiji Red Cross of the Salvation Army.

  27. floods destroy every thing. One of the worst floods is the tsunami. The tsunami wipes out every thing in its way on the coast line. Then brings it back out to sea. Floods are such a disaster because things get rotin or go bad due to the water damage. The olny way floods are good it because they water down spots that are dry. Sometimes if a flood is very heavy then it could cary cars down streets.

  28. The most reacent floods in Oceania is the Rakia Gorge flood. Floods are very dangerous and kill many people at a time. Floods can be caused by rain, or some other cause and they are almost always very dangerous. Floods are dangerous and can injure many.

The most recent flood in Oceania is the Rakaia Gorge Flood. Floods impact the country and more importantly the economy of the country. Floods ruin businesses, houses, families, and leave many citizens unemployed. The most devastating impact of floods are the family losses. After floods, it's really difficult to recover the financial damage. For example, New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina left many people in tough situations. They were dependent on others for food, clothing, shelter, and other needs. No matter how hard people may work, natural disasters such as floods can ruin the efficiency of people's lives.

Kevin5 tells us that on August 7,2008 a flood called Rakaia Gorge flood hit Oceana, and we know this is true because Mandy5, Noelani5, Donna5, Hassan5, and Pinon5 say the same thing. Mandy 5, Noelani5, Donna5, Hassan5, and Pinon5 also tell hus that floods ruin businesses, houses, families, and leave many citizens unemployed, and the most devastating flood impact is family loss. The last thing sounds like an opinion to us, but it's true for most people. Kevin5 also informs us that when crops are destroyed by the floods, many people are left empty handed with nothing to sell to gain money and there is less and less food for people to eat, causing starvation.

I agree with Tarilyn about the floods in Oceania. They ruin people's lives and the many who lose their homes have no where to go. When she said that floods are a natural disaster and there is nothing you can do about it. I agree that when there is a natural disaster its devasting, and can create chaos. They ruin the economy and can destroy entire cities.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The most recent flood was the flood in the Phillipines and New Zealand. The flood caused homes to be destroyed and villages to come down to ruins. This causes stress for people and is very bad for the economy. The city must now rebuild what was ruined. That could take many years to fix.

We agree with Sean5 because he talks about exactly how many deaths that occurred in a storm in the Philippines. He also gives good examples of the affects of the floods on peoples lives. He basically explains how there is not much that people can do to stop these floods. He also does acknowledge the fact that there are many floods in the Philippines. There is also a large amount of the land being destroyed by these floods.

  36. I agree with Maddie5 because I like the comment that she wrote about the the Philippines. How she talks about the "floods are extremely dangerous." It can cause peoples lives, crops and homes. Plus people losses a lot of profit because the crops are destory. I think the Philippines should make a plan to prevent the floods ruin people places, crops and lives

  37. On August 7th 2008 Oceania was flooded. Floods can destroy a countries economy. For example, floods ruined Bangladesh. They are one of the poorest countries in the world because of the annual flooding. It takes a while to recover from a flood.

  38. Flooding can destroy economy as well as homes and food for the people who live there. It always seems to happen that the countries that have the least end up having a natural disaster happen to them and they loose EVERYTHING. Floods can also take the lives of many people because they have no food and no place to live.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The floods are very dangerous because it destroy homes, farms, and kills tones of people. floods completely destroy the economy leaving the state/country at risk for attack. Of course by that point there isn't much to take over. Basically floods leave the area they hit with nothing to restart that's why whenever there is a flood, earthquake, hurricane, or some other kind of major natural disaster the place that is hit needs help from other country's.

  40. September 27th 2009 a storm hit in the Philippines. Mud filled houses and water filled the streets. People had to leave their homes and belongings to survive, but
some did not make it out in time and others are missing. You can't drive anywhere and you can barely trudge through a few feet. This makes it extremely difficult to
get to work and get food.
