NAFTA and the Economy of the USA

"Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed in 1993, the rise in the U.S. trade deficit with Canada and Mexico through 2002 has caused the displacement of production that supported 879,280 U.S. jobs. Most of those lost jobs were high-wage positions in manufacturing industries. The loss of these jobs is just the most visible tip of NAFTA's impact on the U.S. economy. In fact, NAFTA has also contributed to rising income inequality, suppressed real wages for production workers, weakened workers' collective bargaining powers and ability to organize unions, and reduced fringe benefits."
Consider the new unemployment rate 10.2%. What does this say about the U.S. economy now?

  1. Considering the unemployment in the U.S. I can say that that the U.S. economy is in real big trouble and we need to fix it right away. I think the unemployment is going to keep fall if nothing is done to stop it and I think its going to be another depression like in the 30's. This problem didn't just start now it slowly grew into this problem and everyone was to blind to see what was going on in the worker field. Even today people are still blind and don't know whats happening in the real world. For example, the higher class meaning the rich people are living happy with out a care in the world and then the lower class they have to work to the bone just to make enough money to feed their familys.

  2. i would say that is really bad whats going on because there is no work for the farmers and they need money to take home for there families and they have to support all the payments of the home like the rent, food, clothes and alot more this farmers need the job so they could increase in everything..

  3. Even though the rate of unemployment was 10.2%, the economy is not really big trouble, like back in 1929, called black monday. The market was crush, and went down the toilet. This one called the recession, and were close to the depression. But it seems that is going to recover soon. Government where doing the best they can to fix this, like making more jobs, deporting illegal immigrant, so american can have their job instead. It's sad though if you think about it, but its the law.

  4. If the unemployment rate is 10.2% the U.S economy is in a big danger. This is not the way things should be. 10.2% is nothing for the United State economy. The government are doing their best to save us from the passed. For example; recession, depression, black monday, etc. If we work together as a team, we can make things possible. Everything is impossible, so our job to is to make possible. The government should not work in this by themselves, we have to give a little compassion to it. Some people are easily to the government and blame them for all the job lost, the unemployment, loosing their houses all because of the government. We all know that it is their duty and mission to fix what went wrong, but if we do not work as a team to fix this problem it will turn out so ugly and we might be in what called "the great depression", And I bet you no one want this to happen.

  5. To me its is so sad for me to hear what the farmers have to go through because they need jobs to earn money and without a job they cant, wont, get anything. They basically need money to take care of the family, financial problems, and to basically live a regular life like everybody else.

  6. The resession has taken a big toll on everyone. A lot of farmers are out of jobs. They need all the money they can get to raise family's and take care of bills, so when someone takes away their job they are left in a very bad position. They need the money to live. Plus when there are no farmers who is going to grow crops so that everyone else can have food. When farmers have no jobs everyone is afected.

  7. I think that we are in big trouble because the percent is already 10.2 thats double risk because the regular percent its 5.0. The US is in big danger and in my opinion i think that we are going to have a depression. The government needs to do something about it and fast before we get in a big depression. But eventhough its terrible we can still make something but quick. Our big mission as residents of the US is to work as a team and help in all its need it. Blaming others is not the solution. By blaming the government we are not going to get anything. Solution? Work as a team!!!!

  8. As the Capitalist society, there is a frequency of every eight to ten years, there would be a ensure recession. The result of that recession would be, tons of people are lose their jobs, shortage on food, high priced supplies, etc. and that is how Capitalist society economy behaves. Plus there would be another of proximately about 50% of population are working, it would be difficult, but it would be passing over eventually.
During this passing period, this is a great time of companies to "clean-up-garbage", which means, in companies, there always have lazy and irresponsible people, who are waste the resources of the companies. So by the chance, it could fire them and let the spurious stay to work out of the bad situation.
Personally there would be after a while.

  9. I think US economy is in big trouble and it would be worse than great depression if we don't fix that right now. It is worse because unemployment is rising and nothing actully helps them to decrease so we might have to open new jobs for unemploy. In 1930, during great depresion, President Franklin did the same thing and I think that is smart idea to fix economy right now. We might open some sources such as green tech jobs, recycling stores, and some other that helps nation and help them to make some money so we can save our country by saving our enviornment. There are some other option or other faculties that we might have to look for that helps both nation and nation's economy by giving them a job. If we don't come up with a solution as fast as we can than our economy would be worse than it is right now.

Sinai has a good point, but Ana talks about real world examples. I agree with Ana and I hope the economy recovers soon.
