Environmental Disasters and Their Global Impact

"A massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is slowly starting to reach the shore, according to reports. (bbc.com)

Up to five thousand barrels a day are thought to be leaking from the site of the Deepwater Horizon rig which sank on 22 April after an explosion in which 11 workers lost their lives"

What can you imagine will happen in the future when regulating environmental disasters and their impacts?

The explosion of a British Petroleum oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico has created one of the largest oil spills in history. Over 5,000 barrels of oil are being released into the ocean everyday. The only upside of this incident is that if it ever happens again, or if there is a similar situation, we will be better able and prepared to deal with it. New robots are being built, and new methods thought of that will help control the oil's spread and release into the water.

Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil talker to leak oil into the ocean. There are a few more ways an oil spill can occur. Equipment breaking down may cause an oil spill. If the equipment breaks down, the tanker may get stuck on shallow land. When they start to drive the tanker again, they can put a whole in the tanker causing it to leak oil. Birds die from oil spills if their feathers are covered in oil. The bird will then be poisoned because it will try to clean itself. Animals may die because they get hypothermia, causing their body temperature to be really low. Oil may also cause the death of an animal by entering the animal's lungs or liver.

With this experience, people will be more aware of the danger of environmental disasters. With the big amount of oil spilled, workers are trying many different ways to get the oil out of the water and to avoid the land. They have tried to contain the oil, pump it to a collection sump, have chemicals break down oil, and even burn it. None of these techniques have had much success. California, Oregon, and Washington are closing their oil rigs off the Pacific Ocean coast in order to avoid another spill. We will have to find different ways to get the oil and this disaster should be an example to everyone.

Booms are used to contain the oil when it has gone to the surface of the water. Skimmers collect the oil from the surface of the water and pump it into a collection sump. Planes release enzymes onto the oil on the surface to help it break down on the surface of the water, along with the water's waves and wind. Burning oil on the water's surface destroys the oil, but contributes to pollution by burning large amounts of crude oil.

We personally think the govern is very smart on deciding to make use of the oils we have here in america. we need to drill holes under the sea floor to get into the oils. it affects us in manny ways because we touch the water from the gulf mexico. so we have to make it useful by using it for our own good. this well be also very good for california so we could be wealthy. the oils well kill off all living sea creture.

In the future on environmental disaster and its impacts what might happen is that some methods may work but on other times it can create problems. An example is burning the oil method the problem with this method is that it releases toxic fumes. Skimmers can be good to take out the oil of the ocean. The government may become strict with this because the oil is hurting the ocean creature in this delicate ecosystem may be hurt brown pelicans many different ducks, whales, and other coastline and sea creatures etc.

  7. Well said Donna5's group. What might happen in the future though if we continue to plumb in our oceans?

  8. Things like oil leaks will become to be more common and it will be more of a threat in the future. Things with the environment will become much more of an impact in the world and can really lead the world into dying faster. For many people, this is a big issue for the world, and others just don't care what is really happening and what really is going to happen. This impact that happened with the Gulf of Mexico was a big thing, but worse things will start to happen because of the humans and their actions all around the world.

  9. Some methods that they are using can help but others can only create issues. Oil leaks and pollution are becoming bigger issues and in the future it will only get worse. Things like our oceans are also getting polluted by oil spills and other things and this is affecting the animals living in the ocean as well as making it unable for people to enjoy. The world has been having the issue for a long time and now it is happening to the Gulf of Mexico.

These events are much less likely to happen in a future where people are stricter about regulating natural disasters. Although nobody knows if we will be more strict or if we will care at all. At the current rate we think natural disasters will be more prevalent and more dangerous. But if people become more aware and pay more attention to our changing world we can work harder to prevent these events. So we believe that in the future people will be more aware and natural disasters will occur less and will be less dangerous.

  12. Globally, disasters happened everywhere, people start realized the importance of environment, and the surrounding conditions. But theirs realizations are not enough, there are still plenty of people are saying that "Even though we are in special environmental conditions, but we are good, the planet would recover it by itself, which is normal! There is no such thing like global warming." This kind of conversations I heard plenty of times, no matter what happened there still are people do not think the seirous event happening on us.

  13. I believe now people are going to pay more attention to all this environmental disasters because they are hurting all of us with the oil in the ocean. I think now America and other country's are going to work hard to make sure that something like doesn't happen anymore and with all that oil that we are losing it's even more important for use to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. Fixing all of this is not going to be easy it's going to take a lot of work to make sure everything is back to normal but in the mean time a lot of animals and sea live will be in danger, so come on people we need to make the world a better place.

  14. In the future regulating environmental disasters and their impacts will be harder because of oil. In the future it might will be a war over oil because to the most of them people right now oil making the world going aroung but they don't know about the other things that could help in this world. What we got to do is to fight against them and tell them that they are doing the wrong things for us and we have to send the massage to them and tell them we will pick what's best for us to live our lives.

  15. @Cyber Me If You Can
"What might happen in the future though if we continue to plumb in our oceans?" - one word answer - DISASTER! We don't want to continue to plumb our oceans, it can brought to extinction of all species which are living in the oceans, or what is even worse, those species can get sick and people who are eating them can get poisoned and die

    ReplyDelete
  16. We got to try to prevent oil spillers because it brings extinction with all of the species the live in the ocean. and also because we need the oil for many different things. so people should try to prevent oil spillers for a better enviroment
