Current Events Watch-Political Leaders

" The Framers Drew on their skills, knowledge, and experience in creating the Constitution. What kinds of experience and training do political leaders draw on today? Select a current political leader--a member of Congress or the Governor of CA., for example, and write a brief biography of this person. You should include the skills, knowledge, and experience that person draws upon in his or her current position." (MacGruders, 2004)

  1. Today political leaders draw experience from their own lives and their interests and safety of their area. Dianne Feinstein, the first female mayor in 1979, and now the senator of California, is most recognized for her love of crime investigation. “During her early years on the job she tried to please all the different groups in the San Francisco community. She took an interest in police staffing and policies and succeeded in reducing crime rates.” (http://www.notablebiographies.com). She took her interest in crime and put it into her career to keep the city safe, and she did this throughout her entire term. “An active senator who supports the many issues that have become important to her during her decades-long career in public service.” (http://www.notablebiographies.com). Dianne Feinstein is still hardworking after all these years into putting her best interest into California.

  2. Nancy Pelosi drew upon her experiences of being a leader in the Democratic Party, holding public office in one of the most liberal cities in the U.S., and being in the House of Representatives to become the first female Speaker of the House. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1940, Pelosi moved to the highly liberal San Francisco in 1962 after graduating Trinity College with a degree in political science and marrying her husband, Paul Pelosi. There, Pelosi started raising a family and slowly started getting into politics. She eventually became the state and northern chair of the Democratic Party. In 1987, Pelosi represented California's Eight District (San Francisco). In her stint in the House of Representatives, Pelosi strongly supported affordable health care and health care research. Now, as the Speaker, Pelosi is using her leadership experience and stays true to her liberal, democratic roots. "A vocal critic of President George W. Bush’s stance on the war in Iraq, Pelosi has asked for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region" (http://www.biography.com/articles/Nancy-Pelosi-38487). Her experience as a mother and as a democrat led her to vie for "better paying jobs, access to college education and affordable health care for all, and revised energy policy"(http://www.biography.com/articles/Nancy-Pelosi-38487).

  3. There is only one man that has superseded everyone's expectations in government. That man is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He began weight-training at 15. He was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at age 22 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest a total of seven times. Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon, noted for his lead role in such films as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. He was nicknamed the "Austrian Oak" and the "Styrian Oak" in his bodybuilding days, "Arnold Strong" and "Arnie" during his acting career, and more recently the "Governator". As a Republican, he was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003, to serve the remainder of Davis's term. Schwarzenegger was then re-elected on November 7, 2006, in California's 2006 gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor, defeating Democrat Phil Angelides, who was California State Treasurer at the time. Schwarzenegger was sworn in for his first elected term on January 5, 2007.

  4. Today, political leaders need to go through programs to receive the knowledge they need in order to fulfill their job. They have to have an extreme interest in politics and take college classes to educate themselves about the government and how it works. They have to have leadership skills and a true passion for their job. President Obama for example, had started off as a governor of Illinois and graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School as well as a civil rights attorney and a community organizer. He also taught law in Chicago. He had an amazing campaign in 2008 in which he stressed the idea of ending war in Iraq. He is very passionate about what he does and works to please American people. His knowledge, leadership, and passion for what he does is what pushed him to win presidency.

  5. Arnold Schwarzenegger obtained his political stature because he drew from his celebrity fame. Arnold was a very well-known movie star and Hollywood icon, " [...]arguably the greatest action star ever." Although many favored him as an icon, many doubted his abilities to be governor of California because of his lack of experience. Despite many opinions opposed to his candidacy, the majority population still elected him governor on October 7th, 2003. Arnold was sworn into office November 17th, 2003 and since then he has not been as successful as his fans had hoped. The evidence is seen within our current educational system; less school days and cut backs in much needed school supplies and courses make things difficult for teachers and students. He has been reelected on November 7th, 2006 and has yet to be the amazing star as governor as he has upheld in the entertainment business.

She entered politics in 1974 as a congrssional aide. She was elected for U.S. Senate in 1992 and reelected in 1998 and 2004. She is also a strong supporter of schools. 7. Some leaders are great and some are even greater. The best leader on this planet by my opinion is Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is an American politician, author, speaker, and political news commentator who was the youngest person and the first woman elected as the Governor of Alaska. In November 2009, her autobiography Going Rogue: An American Life was released and it quickly became a best-seller, selling more than two million copies. In January 2010, Palin began providing political commentary to the Fox News Channel under a multi-year contract. "http://en.wikipedia.org"
Sarah Palin even has her own show. it's called "Sarah Palin's Alaska". She also considers herself to be a "Hockey Mom".

  8. I have chosen to talk about Peter Rouse because he has my last name, but also he is part of Obama's cabinet. He was a co-chair of the Obama-Biden Transition Project, a senior adviser to President Obama's campaign, and chief of staff to then-Senator Barack Obama. Known as the "101st Senator" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Rouse), for his extensive knowledge of Congress, Rouse served as chief of staff to members of the United States Congress for more than thirty years. Before joining President Obama's Senate office in 2004, he was chief of staff to former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) for 19 years. He also served as chief of staff to then-Rep. Dick Durbin of Illinois (1984-85) and Lt. Governor Terry Miller of Alaska (1979-83). Rouse received a B.A. from Colby College, an M.A. from the London School of Economics, and an M.P.A. from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

President Barack Obama drew on the experiences that he faced that most people face today like drug abuse and racism. Pres. Obama
born to Barack Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His parents were an interracial couple , which was uncommon in the '60s. They married on February 2, 1961. Barack was born six months after. As a child his father left him and his mother, and fearing for the safety of her son, Ann sent Barack Obama to live with his parent in Hawaii. At age 22 barack learned of his fathers death. "At the time of his death, my father remained a myth to me," Obama said, "both more and less than a man."(http://www.biography.com/articles/Barack-Obama-12782369?part=0). In hawaii Pres. Obama dug deep into his studies and the game of basketball. He was able to attend Harvard University in 1988 after several years at other colleges. Here he met Michelle Robinson, an associate at Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. Soon after they met the couple started dating and married On October 3, 1992. They now have two daughters, Malia (born 1998) and Sasha (born 2001).

During Pres. Obama's Democratic campaign he drew on the hearts of the voters with his story. He let it be known that he's not perfect and has been down out and faced some of the same issues that average citizen have like growing up with divorced parents, dabbling with drugs, finding religion, and pursuing higher education to make a difference. Pres. Obama seems like a typical man they may live next door and thats what i believe helped him win the November 4th, 2008 election for presidency. Not to mention he's also up to date on what the youths interests are. He displayed this with a humorous commment, “You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Lil’ Wayne, but probably not, in which case you need to stay in school,” while speaking at a high school. .(http://thathustle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218)

  12. Today’s political leaders need people skills and have to know about not only what is happening in the U.S. but around the world. They draw on their own personal experience and the advice of others. Joe Biden was born on November 3,1942. Joe Biden was elected into the senate in 1972 at the age of 29. He won the reelection six times and became the longest Delaware's serving senator. His main focuses were on foreign relations, drug policy, and criminal justice. On August 3, Barrack Obama official announced Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate. He became the 47th vice president when Obama won the presidential election.

  13. In today's society, politicians must be extremely educated (usually with a background in law) and have a serious passion for politics in order to be involved with the government. They must also have great leadership and public speaking qualities for the public to elect them. President Barack Obama, for example graduated from Columbia University, followed by Harvard where he received his degree in Law. He served as a civil rights attorney in Chicago, Illinois where he later became senator for three terms. He used his time as senator to gain experience in order to become President of the U.S. As much as President Obama accomplished at a young age, he is still considered to have less experience than many presidents prior to him. This goes to show how much experience and dedication it takes to become a highly ranked political leader in today's times.

  14. John Kerry, currently in office as the United States senator of Massachusetts as well as chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has quite a background where he pulls skills and knowledge from.
Before even graduating Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he served as a volunteer for Ted Kennedy's first senatorial campaign and met him due to his relationship to The First Lady's half sister.
Probably the most famous political events in his past was his run as the Democratic Party nominee against George W. Bush in the year of 2004 for presidency, though ultimately unable to defy the president of his second term, losing the election by 35 electoral votes.
Along with his experience in office, he is also a decorated Vietnam veteran, serving from 1966-1970 on the USS Gridley and also participated as a spokesperson for Vietnam Veterans Against War when he came back.
Money has also never been an issue for Senator Kerry, as his wife is none other than Teresa Simões-Ferreira Heinz, who inherited the Heinz fortune and empire from late senator H. John Heinz III. Her net worth is estimated to be 750 million and rising.
John Kerry has become a respected politician through his many years in the office and his past experiences in which he draws from. "John Kerry has never forgotten the lessons he learned as a young man - lessons that have been strengthened in his 19 years on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee". 15. Current political leaders such as Hillary Clinton use their past experience and knowledge of government issues to draw on. For instance, Hillary was the First Lady when her husband Bill Clinton was in office and it helped her experience the bigger picture of politics and government. The former presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, accepted the job as the Secretary of State for the United States and is a part of President Barack Obama's cabinet.
"Shortly after Obama won the U.S. presidential election, he nominated Clinton to become Secretary of State in his 2009 cabinet. She accepted the nomination, and was officially approved by the senate on January 21st, 2009." (www.biography.com)

  17. Political leaders of today mainly gain their experience from seeing what goes on in the world as they grow up and by going to school where they are taught what it is that interests them. Obama for example began his career by going through law school at Harvard which gave lots background info on what he needed to know about the government and how it works. He used that knowledge to become the Senator of Illinois. While he was Senator he learned to manage a single state on his own and thought of plans on how he could improve it. After that he took it up a notch and set out to manage and improve the entire country. First he showed the country what it is he wants to do if/when he becomes president with lots of passion which was to end the war in Iraq and fix the problems that we are having with the economy. Obama’s dedication and passion for our country is exactly what we need to get us back up on our feet.

  20. Meg Whitman is running for Governor of California. She has never technically been in government, but refers to herself as an American Business Woman. While she was working for eBay, the company became popular and started making a lot of money. With all the money she made from the company, Whitman decided to run for governor.
