Fantastic Foe-Sindbad's Legacy

One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, ( c.850-1500) and Panchatantra (c. 300) came from many oral and written sources brought by travelers from China, India and every part of the Middle East.
Think of the monsters you might find in popular stories and movies today. What qualities do these monsters usually have? What does a typical monster or villain look like? What are his or her habits? How does he or she feel about other people? Where do these monsters live--that is, what settings are associated with them?

  1. Cultural understanding of what defines a monster is reflected in the social, scientific, and geopolitical values of the day.

However, there has been a gradual shift in the way "monsters" are perceived over he last several thousand years. As these epic poems were being composed, large, frightful, man-eating beasts were a legitimate fear, and a significant element of ancient culture. That fear of the "unknown" has persisted, however our perception of the term "monster" has been somewhat altered.

The raw definition has remained largely unchanged, however. Going beyond simple appearances, a monster frequently possesses a frightening lack of conventional moral values, compassion, and general humanity, among many other negative qualities. He/she/it often partakes in malicious and/or harmful behaviors, and is generally a detriment to the social order. Monsters, as a rule, have a profound hatred for mankind, which often acts as motivation for their negative activities. And in most instances, the homes of these monsters reflect their very nature.

  2. Now a days, monsters in movies have good qualities in performance, and appearance. A typical villain usually is serious looking but in a creepy way, but a monster looks way different in the way that it has scary appearances and also in the way that it always tries to kill somebody. Their habits would just be killing people or haunting them. They usually do this to the people that have actually done something to them. Most villains or monsters live in lonely old places and just go out to torture others.

  4. All monsters are either miss understood or have bad intentions. They are normally big, vicious and scary. The protagonists and "good" people in the story are either haunted or harassed by the monster or monsters. Monsters seem to be dark, savage and evil. In stories monsters feel misunderstood and/or angry at the people who are seen as good. The monsters tend to live in dungeons, lairs, caves, or other dark exclusive places.

  5. If you look up the word "villain" in a dictionary you get, "any animal or human grotesquely deviating from the normal shape, behavior, or character." A great example would be of course from the television show "Lost". The black cloud in the show sets the standard for a monster. It strikes fear into the people on the island, it murders the people, and lives in a mysterious and ominous place for a long time.

There are plenty other shows that display the average villain, for example, "Heroes". This television show demonstrates what the typical villain looks like. He has this mysterious dark side and the need to kill citizens to get stronger. The villain in "Heroes" was born into a family that gave him no respect which probably made him feel like he needed to be remembered for something big. His background of where he came from definitely had an impact as to how he ended up becoming in the end.

A typical villain or monster is usually in black, cold eyes, monsters are usually big disgusting things with sharp teeth and villains usually are separated from the outside world. They have habits of trying to control or destroy the human race. They usually hate the people around them and have had a traumatic event with people. They have a reason for hating the people around them or is disgusted by the behavior of their actions. They usually are associated in cold depressing settings. You usually don’t see villains and monsters living in the sunny hills’ of Los Angeles. They usually in secluded areas in the mountains or swamps that don’t have to much sun.

Monsters are often the personification of our inner fears. They are usually much stronger than humans and very instinctual. Villains can have similar features to monsters, however, more often than not they have similar physical characteristics to the protagonist of the story.

A monster usually has habits such as ripping things apart and eating everything it sees, ultimately wanting to cause some type of chaos. The goal of the monster is usually to do some type of destruction to a city or either a specific person. 13. Monsters today, have any quality that makes the reader or the viewer uncomfortable, yet curious. People who lack normal human emotions (psychopaths) to zombies, all make people interested and full of wonder. Monsters in todays era can be almost anything. They can be dead or alive, they can be human and non human. Some movies lately feature monsters that arent even seen! Example, The Fog by Rupert Wainwright. However, the usual stereotypical monster like dracula, jason and sasquatch all live secluded. Their environments all differ, but the main thing that stays the same is their seclusions from everyday society. For example, dracula lives in a big scary house, and sasquatch lives in the woods.

  14. Monsters today, are more scary and more detailed in look. actors or actresses have the technology and skill to make any monster look real in life. We have many monsters though some who are very mean, happy, ugly, and weird characters in general. Villains now a days to me are alot more different, everyone tries to be scary but only those who are well sick minded can pull off those kind of skills. It also varies in the environment in which its taking place in.

Rather, a monsters may be the person people around us because you never know the thoughts of that person that can death.
