King Arthur and Legends

"A legend (Latin, legenda, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants includes no happenings that are outside the realm of "possibility", defined by a highly flexible set of parameters, which may include miracles that are perceived as actually having happened, within the specific tradition of indoctrination where the legend arises, and within which it may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic."

Why do people need legends? Trace how the Arthurian legend has changed throughout the years and the modern mediums?

  1. Legends are told to teach morals and lessons in a creative way. People need legends to give hope to the listeners that such a story was possible. The legend of King Arthur has changed throughout time since it has been told and passed on through many generations, however, its morals and lessons remain similar. The legend of King Arthur tells the listeners that everyone has a destiny and that even the most unexpected people can achieve greatness. The legend of King Arthur seems realistic to young audiences who believe in magic and spells, but there are arguable references that such a King Arthur did actually exist. Whether or not there was truly a King Arthur, the story is still enjoyable.

  2. People need legends because it entertains the listeners. They also listen to legends because it gives people hope because like the the story of Arthur, a young man that is chosen by fate to become the king of England. Legends where a part of entertainment for the people back in the day. The Arthurian legend has changed over the years because Arthur gets more modern as the times change but the main theme does not change. It also changes a lot because no one is certain if the story of Arthur is real, so many different people have interpreted it in there own way. Because of this, The story of King Arthur is always questioned and changed through history.

  3. Legends are told to teach and inspire people to do things and live up to things. Over time the details of legends are changed due to them being told in different ways and interpreted in different ways. But in the end of it all the moral of a legend stays the same, it's just the small details that change. In older times most legends, like the Arthurian legend, were more believable because now days less people believe in magic and they just don't seem so realistic. The Arthurian legend is somewhat mysterious, which makes people wonder if it is true or not.

  8. People need legends for both the purpose of entertainment and to teach. It is needed for entertainment because when people are bored, what better way then to have something to listen to. It allows one to listen to somebody talk and occupy free time. But it also allows one to be able to learn about things that have happened in the past. The legend of King Arthur was once a tale of the life of a young boy who would grow up to be a great king and no one would have expected it. However these days this story is told as a lesson, teaching people not only about one person but also about how not to judge someone on their outward appearance but on their inward personality.

  9. legends are tales and tales are legends, they're all meant to be shared and told to family and friends. These legends though are meant to be about something historical, like when people first started telling tales which originated with tribes talking about the ancestry and how well known they are, and how they represent like gods to most people. Arthurian legends have not really changed, I mean sure people have their own stories to tell about King Arthur, but theirs only one original story. The rest are rewrites

  10. Legends, both oral and written, have been a vital component of a multitude of ancient and contemporary cultures throughout history. They provide a means, not only to entertain, but also to teach and inspire. They exist, in large part, to establish a foundation for a perceived "righteous path" a set of moral and ethical guidelines according to which people "should" live their lives.

The Legend of King Arthur has indeed changed dramatically since it was first written. It has been modernized, and otherwise altered to make its message more applicable to contemporary audiences. However, I believe the messages, themes, and morals established in the legend transcend time, and while they can be reshaped to better fit our 21st century society, their meaning cannot be fundamentally changed.

  11. Legends are told to inspire people, they are told to help people find a right path to do good and things that will help them in their lives. Arthurian legends aren't very believable in our time, because people don't believe in magic and dragons. Some people don't believe in them because they don't seem real to our generation.

  12. People need legends in order either influence them to show that anyone can achieve greatness or teach them a lesson about how being hubris can be a downfall. The Arthurian legend has changed many times each time to either make it more modern or leave some parts out but the moral and message of the story stayed the same.

  13. Legends are normally told and passed on amongst generations to teach a lesson or either to provide entertainment. In the ancient times, most legends were fabricated stories, and the story teller had to make them interesting so people would listen to them and believe in the characters in their story. Legends gave people something to believe in,worship and honour. Over time, people may start believing that the story was actually real, if it had been told and re-told enough over the years.

  14. legends are needed to keep the past in the president to teach morals and lessons and the righteous path way of life and just to keep the past alive with its amazing adventures. The Legend of King Arthur has changed only because of modern times that the theme is still alive. rags to riches but with a hero twist that flows the righteous path with epic adventures.

  15. Legends are needed for a number of reasons. One being simply for entertainment stemming from when oral traditions were the only way to spread stories throughout a culture or society. They are also used to teach lessons and morals. They are interesting because even though they date back to a long time ago the lessons and morals taught through them can be applied to society today. The legend of Arthur started out to be pretty strong at a time where people were very superstitious and believed in things like magic. However, in today's society most people don't believe in magic anymore so the Arthurian legend has lost some if its strength. Regardless, it is still an important story that teaches a lesson and will be passed down for many more years.

  16. Legends serve numerous purposes for people in their lives. It is a source of curiosity, hope, entertainment, and a form of an endeavor to be sought. Legends, by definition, are "A story about mythical or supernatural beings or events." Being that there will always be people who seek comfort in oral stories and tales of legends, they will always exist in our lives no matter the time setting. Legends are always controversial and therefore, will always be sought after to be deemed true or false. They have been known to give sense of hope to people who would rather take uncertainty over the harsh nature of truth. The king Arthur legend is one of the oldest yet most renowned legends. This is proven by the fact that it is still told today and still used through modern mediums such as movies, cartoons, and works of literature. The legend itself, however, has been altered and retold in different contexts throughout the ages of its oral nature. Despite this fact, the legend still retains its same basic principles and morals.
