Renaissance Creativity-Can We Recapture It?

In the era of the High Renaissance, 1495-1530, in places like Italy, the citizens of Florence and Rome viewed their cities as rivals of ancient Athens, Princes, church leaders, and men of fortune dominated politics. These men sponsored artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael, who gave people new ways of looking at themselves. Can you think of anything that we have today which serves the same purpose?

  1. In today's society, Lady Gaga would be one example of a person with radical ideas similar to the many artists during the Renaissance. Her extremely strange clothing and distinct music are her ways of expressing her desire to stand out in an artistic way. During the Renaissance, people were breaking away from conformity and it was looked highly upon for the first time. Before the Renaissance, one was born into their occupation and it was rarely accepted to break away from that to do something artistic. This era is considered by some to be the bridging between the Middle Ages and Modern era.

  2. There are many ways people try to accomplish individualtiy. Whether it's the way they dress, do their hair, people really like to go outside of the box. Especially when it comes to looks. There are many famous singers that we consider fashion icons, because they wear things that the average person would never wear. A singer that often does this is Rihanna. She wears crazy outfits and styles her hair in a different way with each outfit. This relates to the era of the Renaissance because this is when people were breaking away from conformity and starting to figure out their own way of living.

  3. In this generation, Michael Jackson is an example of a man that gave us a new perspective, and way to look at things. Like da Vinci and Michaelangelo, he had a huge impact on the society. Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer of all time. He practicably invented pop music in America. His music, style, and stage presence changed music in America and the world. Maybe only The Beatles are the only other group that has had a global impact like mj. He was the archetype of his music, like Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo of art in the renaissance time. These icons have may seem very different but, they are very similar in the fact that they all started something new and it changed the whole mindset of a generation.

  4. In our generation, people have all these thoughts about doing something to make a differnece in society or life, but only key people who excel in life actualy accomplish that idea. An everyday person for example could be one of your own classmates. Just one of those people who are alway involved or is trying to make a difference and even just to make a scene to get noticed. A person like that who does something to change an oppinion or a sense of style is someone who will amount to great things in life. Everyone has that potenticial, the choice is wether your going to do it or not.

  5. In the past decades there have been many influential people varying from many different backgrounds and cultures. Among those various influential people i think Bill Gates is the most influential because of his motviation and inventions. He left one of the most prestigious technical school in the U.S. to make his inventions reality. By doing so he has influenced our society and our cultures with his inventions that vary from the ipod to the macbook air. Like the renaissance people where influenced to think differently and to try new things, which is also part of our generation.

  6. Some people in today's society with radical ideas that have influence the common person are Kanye West and Oprah Winfrey. They both have a deep impact on society and are followed by media. People follow them and their trends. For instance Kanye West influences people through his music and clothing trends. People pay attention to Oprah Winfrey's talk show and what she does. They are just like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael from the renaissance time. Although these people are from two different eras they all have set new trends and movements.

  8. The Renaissance was a time where people were trying to find new ways of thinking and new ways of looking at things. They would go against what is expected by society and try to influence others to follow them in their new ways. Today's society could be seen as a new era of a "Renaissance". Back then the new ways of thinking came mostly from things like religion while today I feel like it is coming more from our pop culture. Singers, like Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, are an example of this. Their songs, appearances, actions, etc. are seen as different and sometimes even surprising. Lady Gaga is usually very vocal about what messages she is trying to portray to society while others are more secretive but either way, they are making an impact and inclfuencing change in the way people think everyday.

  9. Many people today have different ways of expressing themselves. For example, many singers today like Lady Gaga gives people different views of her in her videos and the way she dresses. Another example would be Michael Jackson, he changed peoples thoughts about him by showing what he really is about. Todays society is much similar to the Renaissance in many different ways.

  11. Today it is quite common to see a music icon that has a strong influence over his or her audience. Michael Jackson for example is a music artist that played a major role in the start of the pop culture movement and today although he dead his legacy continues to influence his fans. Michael Jackson was the ultimate emblem of US pop culture for us. Even kids who never listened to his music would have identified him in one look. If you ask artist such as Chris Brown or Usher who inspired them to do what they do, amongst other names you will hear Michael Jackson. MJ's music was and still is played everywhere in the world.

  12. I would have to say that Zach Galifianakis is a popular renaissance like figure today. He is one of the biggest celebrities right now in the entertainment business. He has changed the way we view comedy because his way of being funny is in a mellow way. He doesn't try to express his views crazily, but rather he likes to be calm when he talks and enjoys making fun of himself. Even when watching his movies, you can tell he is "different" because he only makes fun of himself and doesn't hurt other peoples feelings in the process.

  13. I'm not entirely convinced that the contemporary renaissance is comparable to the Renaissance of the late 15th-early 16th century, in terms of scale or conceptual contribution. However, I also believe that any innovative or novel way of thinking can indeed be considered a renaissance movement.

In that sense, I believe the current generation of Experimental/ Techno/ Dubstep producers are significant part of the current renaissance. Producers like Flying Lotus, Prefuse 73, and Bassnectar are leading the charge to establish these genres in innovative ways.

  14. There are examples of a lot of radical change in the 20th century that equal the radical times of the Renaissance Era. In music, Colt Ford and Kid Rock mix genres of music that were never thought possible. Rap and Country are as opposite as Snoop Dogg and Hank Williams Jr are. These times are big on change, even the president is centered around change. The whole idea of "normal" no longer applies. Miss U.S.A. is revoked of her title now-a-days for her "normal" views. Everything goes it seems in this Renaissance.
