Gothic Themes and the Supernatural

"While belief in the supernatural served as the basis for the mythologies of early civilizations, and afterward remained an enduring aspect of world folklore, it was not until the nineteenth century that a substantial body of works evolved that focused upon the otherworldly as a source of horror. Although Gothic novelists often included supernatural incidents in their works, they also pursued other concerns, particularly those related to eighteenth-century morals and manners. Such concerns precluded the single-minded focus and inventiveness of their successors in portraying weird and ghostly phenomena. The Gothic novel was characterized by intricate but often loosely constructed plots and subplots, stock characters such as the naive young woman and the lascivious male villain, and a medieval setting, such as a haunted, ruined castle."

Can you name a TV, film or modern day novel which resurrects the Gothic themes from the same era? Be specific.

  1. Twilight. It has many elements that consist of a "Gothic novel", for example a naive girl lives a normal life until she meets a mystical vampire villian, who she eventually falls in love with. There is a vast ammount of drama and wierd things are always happening to her throughout the novels. The begining novel is also set in the forest, where medieval castles were sometimes built.

  2. A gothic movie is Casper the Friendly Ghost. In which a ghost named Casper "haunts" a house with some other ghosts but Casper is the only friendly ghost that doesn't haunt the people. Casper makes friends with the little girl in the house while the rest of them scare the household. This movie was set in a normal town but the house the ghosts lived in was dark and kinda spooky.

  3. A gothic movie that I know of would be the whole Batman series. This series is about a man, Bruce Wayne, who uses the all around fear that everyone has toward the disheartening bat. This movie is set in modern times where the Dark Night uses weaponry advanced in technology. The Batman fought only at night to protect and take away the crime and corruption that once engulfed Gotham city.

  4. A movie with a gothic theme is "The Nightmare Before Christmas."It is about Jack Skellington the leader of the Halloween town, who find Christmas town and decides to take over it. The monsters go into Christmas town and start violence, which shows a lot of the goth themes in Tim Burton"s story. This movie changed the way people saw goth. The movie was seen by any children it set a revival in the goth themes in this era.

  5. Twilight is probably the most popular series today that is based on the gothic themes of the 1800s. It combines the element of romance and horror to create a plot that has become very popular in teens today. Due to the success of the Twilight series, there have been many tv shows that have also used vampires since people find it entertaining. However, it seems that people either love this type of show or hate it.

  6. A gothic movie would be Twilight. Twilight is very popular today, especially in teens. Its popular in the way that it combines evil with the good and romance as well. I think vampires are the main villains right now, because there has been many tv shows that have to do with vampires and are very gothic, as well as the whole Twilight series, and people seem to be entertained by them.

  7. A gothic show that I have seen is Danny Phantom. He lives in a normal neighborhood with his family but he was in an accident and is now half human half ghost. He goes around trapping ghosts causing havoc in his town and sending them back to the ghost realm. It is always pretty dark and not very kind people in his city. His best friend is a very dark gothic girl.

  8. An example of a show that represents the gothic themes of the supernatural is Ghost Whisperer. In this show the main character Melinda can see ghost. She uses this power to help ghosts come to peace with dying and cross their spirits over. People on the show don't believe her abilities at first until she tells them specific things about the loved one that had died. She uses her powers to try and make everyone happy. Ghost Whisperer is a great example of these gothic themes in today's society and life.

  9. I just recently watched a movie called Jennifer's Body, that represented "gothic" themes. The movie starred Megan Fox as a demon, monster, boy eater. She ate boys to get pretty because she was cursed by an evil boy band. It was a really weird plot but they modernized the whole movie. The slang and phrases they used were very contemporary and something people in the origional gothic era would not understand.
