Ding Dong the Wicked Terrorist Is Dead..?
When I heard the news, that Osama Bin Laden was killed in a Navy Seals Mission, the music from The Wizard of Oz came unbidden into my head. Some eerie lyrics just started to play there as I listened to the news of people rejoicing in the streets of NYC, at Ground Zero. In my mind's eye, I saw the munchkins, as US citizens, dancing and singing and hugging each other; and it felt surreal. Even as reports came in that he was buried at sea, I almost felt like, this is usually something we haven't had closure to: a public enemy number 1, actually getting caught. It seems strange to celebrate the death of anyone, but there are a few leaders, both dead, alive or fictitious ( Hitler, Omar Al Basir, Darth Vader, for example) which jump readily to mind, that would cause frolicking in the streets. I know that many of my friends, and fellow New Yorkers, who survived the 9/11 attack, are finally able to have closure, but knowing he lived in the lap of luxury in Pakistan, for close to the last 10 years, is disturbing to say the least. There is more to this story, I'm sure, and I hope the last 10 years have not given him the freedom to build his Al-Queda empire with new "Bin Ladens".
In any case, this is a feather in the president's cap. On his watch, our elite forces were able to find him, and that is encouraging.
