Debates. Win or Lose. They Matter.

How good of a debater are you? Certainly prep work, evidence and fact checking are involved.  There is also something to be said for being a good public speaker.  Is this a quality you think an American President needs?  Why or why not?  Which candidate has this?  Give specific reasons why you say they do or don't.

  1. I think a president does need to be a good public speaker. But a voter or someone that is trying to decide which candidate to vote for or is their first time voting would want a candidate that can talk directly to them not all with facts and numbers but emotionally. A candidate should create a bond with his citizens one that makes the voters feel safe about having that specific candidate as their next president. In this election is a little difficult to tell specially when everyone was saying that Romney did better than Obama in the debate. If I had to choose it would be Obama but then my choice would be biased because Obama is working on help for DREAMers. But even romney with his republican ideals to me he feels like a weak president. Like in the video he does not emit to me a sense of "I feel safe with him as my president".

  2. I believe for a person to do substantially great in a debate or in a speech he/she must be a good public speaker. The way you come off to people, the way you present yourself, your body language, and your tone of voice are key to being a good debater. People tend to listen more to the speaker or candidate that he/she feels more comfortable with. In regards to an American President, good public speaking skills is an essential trait. Obama is one of the greatest public speakers I have seen, not only does he always have more than enough information on what he is speaking about, but his presence and tone covey a certain connection to me. He always makes sure that his speeches are understandable and when he speaks on a very sensitive issue, he handles it with total calm. America needs a leader that can handle any case and maintain peace and stability.

  3. In this video, the topic was about the debates and how the little things do matter. They disccussed how the presentor looked and how that played a huge roll in the debate. One example used was the debate that Nixon under took. They said that he seemed to be winning the debate simply because of his charm. Most people believed that he had won because of how he ooked on television. Also, the way the presentors ooked was also very important. Some that showed a good example of this was Bill Clinton. He is known for his way with words and how he can connect with the people.

  4. Ok. This situation is starting to de a little more interesting. Firs answering the first question, I can say that in question of speeches I am little bit afraid, because during the debate the person that is involved has to have a good and strong position. I have a strong position when I am defending my rights or when I have to convince to some people to do a god thing instead of a worse thing. Moreover, each person has qualities and advantages over other people, and the candidates running for president have to be the perfect chose for the people that are watching the debate. For this reason the American president has to be a perfect speaker, because he has to convince the whole country to vote for him. In the past years just Bill Clinton has the skill of perfect speaker. He was talking to the audience with a big strategy to walk around answering the questions to the people that are in front of him. In conclusion I can say that in the present debates the candidate that has the advantage over the other is who has the experience and the knowledge to guide the country to the correct way

  5. (Kammille/7per)I'm bad debater because I am nervous when I speak to many people.Basically I prepare to speak to people I know. Also I'm afraid I might be wrong to my words. To being a good public speaker is the body language shows confidence or being comfortable. I want a president with confidence. They should be start strong and close stronger too, so that the people listening to them will remember their first and last words to all of they said. The candidate has this is Obama because he spoke stutters to much. When Obama was interrupted by moderator. He said "I've 5 more seconds for my answer."

  7. We are a bad debater because we don't use to have good facts. We are not the kind of person who search for a lot of information and we don't use to look for the long ones.
We are a bad debater because we get so nerveous when we have to speak in front of people and even when we have good facts,in front of people we forget them.
We do think a president should be able to debate and be ready for every question the people would ask.

  8. I'm a bad debater because I don't really like to speak in front of people. When I'm speaking in front of people I get scared and nervous even if I have good facts. I think that a president should be able to debate.

  9. I am a bad debater because i don't watch the debates and i don't search for any information, i don't look for anything but like gavy says we get so nervous when we present we forget about the facts that we do... is saying

  11. I am a great debater because I am not scared speaking in front of people. If I know facts the he does not know I will use it against him. I am one of the people that likes to talk for a long time. I think a president should be able to debate because people want to hear which is the better choice.

  12. We are bad debates because one reason is that we are nervous to talk and we don't know how to debate. We think the debate of the president was to terrible because if you will debate you need to concentration on the debate. We disagree with the president that watches the clock or sometime they don't know what to say. We think the people who listen they feel uncontrollable.

  13. We are a bad debater because we don`t know about all the problems that are in the U.S. and we are shy to talk in front of people. A good speaker will show respect, be confidence, and not be shy to talk in front of people. We think an American President should have this qualities because people will be sure and happy that the choice they made are they want and they will be happy that his choice know what his doing. We think Barack Obama has this qualities because he has been the president for 4 years and he had made good choices like health care. Also, he is always ready to answer the questions they ask.

  16. A confident speaker can always leave a good impression on the public. I feel that a president needs this skill in order to assure their people that they know what they are doing. If someone is knowledgeable and can present their opinions under pressure, like a political debate for example, then I feel that can win over some trust to that candidate. Although a debate isn't everything, I myself am not a strong debater, I feel that they do leave an impression. In the video, it was mentioned how Al Gore kept sighing, and left a bad impression. It was just bad body language, but it was still noticed.

Being a good debater is a quality that an American President needs to have. I think being a good debater is a quality that an American president needs to have because it a way to express themselves. Also it a way to represent the American people. President Obama has a great debating quality. I think President Obama has a good debating quality because he expresses well his ideas and Romney only attacks. Also president Obama can relate more to the American people.

We are very strong debaters because we research everything. We also make sure all of the information we are saying is 100% true. We are also bad debaters because we don't listen to what other people are saying and their opinion. I do think that a president should be a good debater because then out county could all agree on one thing because he/she would be very persuasive.

  19. I think debating is great way to judge a potential president. It shows how they deal with someone with different opinions, and more importantly, they explain their views on very important subjects that would be totally relevant to the job of the president. Fact checking is very important though, as the people need to know what the person would actually do as president and they absolutely have to believe him because of all the trust that we put into our president. Obama is a better public speaker in my opinion. He seems very comfortable talking to large groups of people and very confident in what he is saying. Also, what he says is consistent and true, which was previously mentioned as an important aspect of debating and running for president.

  20. I think that presidential candidates need to be good at public speaking because they a good president needs to express themselves with words more than actions so when a candidate is doing his speech, they need to be very focus because the whole country is watching them and deciding weather to vote for them or not, so public speaking is the most important part of a person. for example in the video when George W. bush was talking, the other candidate was looking at his watch, which this little things can make a difference.

  21. i believe a president should be a better debater than anyone because he is running our country. He is who makes the calls and changes in our country but he has to have other people agree with him so he needs to be a good debater.

  22. We disagree with Ashley because we believe that the President should have good actions not good words. Somebody can stand on the podium and just sweet talk his way into office. We would rather see a track record of a candidate than a nice speech. We would also not want a president that changes his views a lot. When a president does that, that means that his views aren't stable. We think that the president should be a good speaker though. A good speaker is different from a good debater. A good public speaker in our eyes us better.

  23. I agree with Favi and his group that the president should have good actions rather then words. If the president just was a good debater or speaker then nothing would ever actually happen just a lot of debating.
